The following are some November events that may be of interest to you.
Online Course: LLC’s for Nebraska Farms and Ranches: The program is designed to help farm and ranch families make informed decisions about whether an LLC is the right structure for their business and avoid costly mistakes. Course participants will learn how to:Decide whether an LLC is the right entity structure for their operation, Navigate the steps and costs of forming an LLC in Nebraska, Identify and avoid frequent legal and tax missteps through better business management.
The course includes short video interviews with attorneys, accountants and ag professionals, as well as checklists, worksheets and links to podcasts and articles that address specialized topics. The cost for the course is $150 per person. Participants will have access to the course for 90 days from the date of enrollment. Central Nebraska Regen Ag Conference will be held on Tuesday, November 11 from 8:45 a.m.-4:30 p.m. at the Phelps Co. Ag Center in Holdrege (Registration at 8:00 a.m.). The cost is $29 for those who register before November 3. Ray Archuleta will be the keynote speaker sharing on “Why Regenerative Ag is the Future” and “The Tools of Regenerative Agriculture”. Dr. Ray Ward will also be sharing on “The Value of Residue”. There will also be a producer panel and vendors present. Registration includes a light breakfast and lunch. Optimizing Herd Health and Longevity will be held Nov. 12 from 9:30-10:30 a.m. at the Bremer Center in Aurora. Josie Crouch, Extension Educator, will talk about heifer selection and development, winter grazing strategies, and market outlook. There is no charge for this program.
Farmers & Ranchers College: The 2025-2026 Farmers & Ranchers College will kick off with a Cover Crop Grazing Conference on November 21, 2025, at the Clay County Fairgrounds in Clay Center, NE. This program will serve as our annual Cow/Calf College and provide growers and producers who utilize cover crops strategies for success. This year’s event will feature presentations on managing nitrates and prussic acid in cover crops, as well as the latest developments in virtual fencing technology. Attendees will also benefit from a producer panel sharing firsthand experiences, quick-hit poster presentations highlighting current research, and guided field tours focused on practical cover crop grazing strategies. The Agricultural Update and the Road Ahead with Dr. David Kohl will be held on December 3, 2025, at the Opera House in Bruning, NE at 1:00 p.m. Finally, a special couple or family program on family farm transitioning will be held on March 19, 2026. Organic Conference: Are you interested in learning more about organic farming, are in the transition process or are already a certified organic producer? We invite you to join us for our third annual “Transition to Organic Farming” conference on December 2, 2025, at the Eastern Nebraska Research and Extension Center near Mead. York Co. Corn Grower Plot Results: Special Thank You to Doug, Jason, and Karah Perdue for hosting the York Co. Corn Grower Plot this year! Out of the Office: I’m excited to take some time off, including for my wedding! I won’t be answering questions till I return November 18. You are still welcome to please reach out to your local Extension office with questions and the office staff will direct you to a colleague who can help.
Dr. Kohl at Farmers/Ranchers College Dec. 3: This year Farmers & Ranchers College will kick off December 3rd featuring Dr. David Kohl. Registration will start at 12:45 p.m. and the program will start at 1:00 p.m. at the Opera House in Bruning, NE. The program is titled, “Economic Realities in the Agricultural Industry: The Pulse.” What economic realities can we expect to see in the global and domestic agricultural industry? Dr. Kohl keeps a pulse on trends and factors to be mindful of during the economic downturn. Some of these topics are land and machinery values, interest rates, concentration of agriculture, importance of cash flows, non-financial factors and much more.
Many to the area are very familiar with Dr. Kohl, but if you are not, here are some details about him. Dr. Dave Kohl is an academic Hall of Famer in the College of Agriculture at Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA. Dr. Kohl has keen insight into the agriculture industry gained through extensive travel, research, and involvement in ag businesses. He has traveled nearly 10 million miles; conducted more than 6,500 presentations; and published more than 2,250 articles in his career. Dr. Kohl’s wisdom and engagement with all levels of the industry provide a unique perspective into future trends. Don’t miss this high energy session in preparation for 2025!
Big Questions and Innovative Solutions in Land Management is a series of workshops being presented throughout the State for farm and ranch landowners, landlords, and tenants who want to learn more about current trends in farm or ranch real estate, and best practices for managing or leasing land.
Topics include evaluating current trends in land values and cash rents, lease provisions and legal considerations, proper communication strategies and considerations for successful land transitions. Workshop participants will also be able to find answers to common farmland leasing and land ownership questions. The program is free to attend but registration is required by calling the phone number at the location you desire to attend.

Happy New Year! The following are upcoming programs you may be interested in attending.
York Ag Expo: Hope to see you at this year’s York Ag Expo at the Holthus Convention Center in York January 9 and 10th! The list of sponsors and exhibitors can be viewed at: https://yorkchamber.org/event/ag-expo/. Educational sessions are being offered again at the Expo. On January 9th, Chemigation training (both initial and recertification) will begin at 9 a.m. There is no charge and please bring a calculator with you. If you are coming for initial training, I’d recommend you get the materials before-hand to look through and you can receive them from the Extension Office. At 1 p.m., Brad Lubben, Cory Walters, and Austin Duerfeldt with UNL will share the latest on the Farm Bill, Crop Insurance decisions, and Farm Tax information. Farm Credit Services of America will also share information. On January 10th, I will have a private pesticide training session at 9 a.m. Please bring your barcode letter from NDA if you have it and the cost is $40. Then at 1 p.m., Mary Drewnoski, Michael Sindelar, and I will discuss residue removal considerations via baling and grazing. Tim Mundorf with Central Valley Ag (CVA) will be sharing on the value of manure as well. At 4 p.m. on Thursday the 10th, Chad E. Colby, Ag Technologist and well known on Ag Twitter, will be the keynote speaker. He is being sponsored by CVA. This will be followed by the Celebrating Ag Social Hour sponsored by the Rural Radio Network from 5-7 p.m. Lunch will be served both days beginning at 11:30 a.m. and sponsored by Cornerstone Bank. Pulse Crop Expo: There’s been quite an interest in pulse crops the past few years in Nebraska. Some growers are looking at pulse crops to change up labor requirements during the year, looking for a different market and price, or looking for another crop that allows cover crops to be planted and established after harvest. To learn about getting started with pulse crops or how to enhance your existing pulse production, don’t miss the 2019 Nebraska Pulse Crops Expo January 7 at the Holiday Inn in Kearney from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Lucas Haag, northwest area agronomist with Kansas State University, will be the keynote speaker, presenting on field pea growth and development and management of field peas at critical growth stages. Other presentations include research-based information on production practices, tillage, seeding rates, and irrigation. The 2019 NE Pulse Crops Expo is sponsored by the SARE (Sustainable Agriculture and Research Education), the Nebraska Environmental Trust, and pulse crops industry partners. Farmers and Ranchers Cow/Calf College: This annual program will be held at the U.S. Meat Animal Research Center and Great Plains Veterinary Education Center near Clay Center on January 14, 2019 with registration, coffee and donuts starting at 9:30 a.m. The program will run from 9:55 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. This program is sponsored by Nebraska Extension’s Farmers and Ranchers College and RSVP is needed for the noon meal. Speakers include: Welcome by Dr. Mark Boggess of USMARC and Dr. Dale Grotelueschen, Director of the Great Plains Veterinary Education Center; Mary Drewnoski with “To Graze or Not to Graze? Factors that Affect Risk Nitrate Toxicity in Annual Forages”; Rick Funston with “Increasing Production Efficiency”; Brandy VanDeWalle on “Family Farm Stress”; Amy Schmidt with “Top 3 Environmental Considerations During Short-Term Cow-Calf Confinement” and Dr. Kip Lukasiewicz on “Animal Husbandry Strategies to Improve One’s Efficiency”. 23rd Annual Great Plains Growers Conference: This conference will be held in St. Joseph, Missouri on January 10-12 for anyone interested in growing fruit, vegetable, hydroponics, cut flowers for production. Topics on Jan. 10 include: “Cover Crops and Soil Health”; “Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) Grower Training”; “Hops Potential”, “Selling Local Foods” and “Honey Bees & Beekeeping”. Concurrent sessions on Friday and Saturday Jan. 11 and 12 provide more than 50 presentations on a wealth of subjects. In addition to presentations on conventional and organic vegetable production, there will be tracks on tree and small fruit production; organic and conventional vegetable production; season extension; greenhouse and hydroponics; cut flowers and technology for growers.
