Hi! I’m Jenny Brhel. I love Jesus, spending time with my family, friends, and in God’s creation, and learning and walking alongside of others in our life journeys.

My husband Brian and I seek to steward the land we have by farming in a sustainable way. We utilize plants with grazing cattle to improve land with less nutrient and chemical inputs. We also raise row crops and cover crops for seed and grazing. We strive to prove out soil health concepts on our own farm to determine their sustainabililty and profitability that could be transfered to others’ farms. We appreciate the importance of community and desire to walk alongside others in their soil health journeys. In that, we both are involved in the Nebraska Soil Health Coalition. 

My faith in Jesus Christ alone as my Lord and Savior is an important part of my life and my core values drive all my decisions. 

In this blog I’ll share what I’m learning about soil health concepts, research we’re learning about in the realm of soil health, and observations from our farm. I look forward to hearing what you’ve observed and seen as well in the comments!

Much of the archives of this blog stem from writing nearly every Sunday night for 22.5 years as an Extension Educator for the University of Nebraska-Lincoln prior to leaving that career to farm with Brian. I had a wonderful career and deep relationships with the people I served and I’m grateful!!! My desire was to fulfill the land grant mission to the best of my ability in bringing research-based information to the people I served. Because of the large amount of content, my hope is that the information can still be of use as people search for various topics.

For context, I was previously Jenny Rees and as a Nebraska Extension Educator, I served a good portion of south central and eastern Nebraska. My degrees are in agronomy, crop protection and plant pathology from UNL. 

I grew up on a small crop and livestock farm in Northeast Nebraska where I learned to love the farm and outdoors. My 4-H experiences helped me develop life skills such as public speaking, leadership, and plant identification-all of which I often utilized in my Extension career and in life. I think and work with a system’s perspective with projects and problem solving. I also appreciate learning from the people I serve.
